Top 5 Must Haves- Gear for Summer Running

Runners Tech: Top 5 Must-Haves for Summer Running:

I agree with the top five things mentioned in this blog for summer running.
1. Hydration
2. Hat
3. Sun Block
4. Skin Lubricant
5. Eyewear

Hydration is essential.  I use a nathan running Belt like the one pictured for most runs.  If it is a longer run I use a 100 oz. Camelbak.

Hats are essential for me.  I sweat a lot and Headsweats Hats seem to do the best job of keeping the sweat out of my eyes.

Sun Block is where I struggle.  I typically don't wear it unless I know I am going to be out running for at least an hour and a half.  Most of my routes are pretty shaded by design and I have never gotten burnt while running.

Skin Lube is a must for longer runs.  Chafing is Bad News.  Prevent it by using Body Glide.  Just don't mistake it for deodorant like so many people do, myself included.

Sunglasses are very important and will keep you from squinting which actually slows you down and tires you out quicker.  I use the New Balance pair below.  I reccommend a pair that is Polarized.  Spend the extra money, they are better on your eyes and much clearer to look through.  And maybe it is just this pair but I feel like they don't fog up as much as compared to my older New Balance pair that is not polarized.

Coconut Oil for Running or Workout Fuel

I have recently been enlightened to the fact that Coconut Oil is an amazing product.  In my research to try and find a better solution than goo's and gel's for nutrition and hydration when running long distances, I discovered MCT oil.  MCT stands for Medium-Chain-Triglycerides.  MCT's as opposed to LCT's or Long-Chain-Triglycerides  do not get stored in the body as fat.  The way I understand it is that something about their make up allows them to pass through the digestive system and move straight into cells rather than having to be processed and broken down.  This allows them almost instantly be used up as energy when running or performing other strenuous activities.  While you can buy pure MCT oil and down it or use it for cooking, Coconut oil is a cheaper option that is packed full of MCT's.  It varies by brand but the the picture above is the kind I currently am using and it contains 62% MCT's.  So far I have been using Coconut Oil in the Skinny Muffin recipe that I blogged about previously.  I will become a human guinea pig soon as I will be testing out Coconut Oil as a fueling source once I begin marathon training in July.  I am not sure I will be able to just eat a spoonful of Coconut oil before I go out and run so I am going to start mixing it in my Shakeology Shakes each morning and trying to have a Skinny Muffin before I leave the house for a run.  Check out the link below which explains all of the other benefits that Coconut Oil has to offer.

The Best Time To Take Your Supplements.

Check out this article on when to take your supplements.  I have always struggled with this. The key that works best for me is getting flavors that mix together well and drinking certain supplement powders in the same shake.  I used to try to have 3 or 4 different Shakes and it was a lot to down right before or after my workouts and left me feeling bloated from all the stuff in my belly.

Shakeology-Nutrition Simplified

I love this stuff.  It tastes great which is number one for me.  Number 2,  it is super healthy. Loaded with nutrients super foods and healthy nutrition. Number 3, it is so convenient.  I have a shake everyday for my breakfast and it takes about 30 seconds to mix it with some Almond Milk and Peanut Butter. (my preferred recipe)  It also keeps me full until Lunch and I don't snack as much.  Watch this video and see the great value and all the nutrition that is in every shake.

Coffee Ain't So Bad

Coffee can be good for you and have many nutritional benefits.  It is also great for energy.  Just don't load it up with Sugar and Syrups, I know it is tasty that way but you are basically drinking sugar at that point and losing the health benefits.  I add Chocolate Almond Milk and Stevia to my Coffee when I drink it.  And don't even think about CoffeeMate Creamers they may taste good but they are actually flammable.  Do you really want that in your body?

3 Day Shakeology Cleanse Review

I will preface by saying that I love Shakeology and have been using it as my everyday breakfast for about 6 months.  It truly is the best tasting shake I have ever tried (Chocolate flavor anyways).  Most shakes taste "chalky" and have an aftertaste, Shakeology doesn't.  It is a great way for me to get all my nutrients in one easy to make shake.

Now on to the Cleanse review.

I recently completed the 3 day Shakeology Cleanse.  In just 3 days I lost 9 lbs.  It was probably the easiest cleanse I have ever done, and I have done a few.  I once did one that required you to take a bunch of pills with every meal and drink nasty tasting teas all the time.  Not to mention you were in the bathroom every 10 minutes.  I did another one that was 21 days long and all you could eat was fruits and vegetables.  It was really tough because I absolutely despise vegetables.

The Shakeology cleanse is by far the easiest one I have done to date.  You simply have 3 shakes, 2 cups of Green tea, a salad for Dinner with Chicken or White Fish and a Low fat salad dressing.  You are also allowed one or two pieces of fruit for snacks during the day.  You do this for 3 days and you will see results.

Day 1:

My first day was pretty straightforward.  I had a Chocolate Shake for Breakfast, mixed with water and ice and a cup of Green Tea.  The same for Lunch.  A banana for a snack in the afternon.  Dinner was a Spinach salad (i'm not a fan of lettuce so I substitute spinach in my salads)  with Tilapia and a low fat French dressing.  I then had a third shake a couple hours before bed.

Day 2:

Day 2 my meal plan was a carbon copy of Day 1 (if it ain't broke don't Fix it right?).  Day 2 I struggled a little bit.  I was hungry, not starving.  But, the worst part was that I had a very dull headache from mid morning into the evening.  I assume it was from my lack of caffeine, and the toxins leaving the body.  That's the point of a cleanse after all.

Day 3:

Day 3 I felt great.  I followed the same meal plan only switching up my shake at lunch with the Greenberry flavor.  And, I ended up feeling so full after my dinner salad that I actually skipped my 3rd shake on day 3.

Results:

9 pounds lost

Finally under 250 lbs. again

Increased energy

I feel full with smaller portions
