Nutrition Labels, Marketing Companies & Shakeology

ONE thing that I have learned is that MARKETING COMPANIES are ON TO YOU!!! They know that most of us (who are trying to be health conscious) flip over the product and take a quick glance at 3-4 things (Calories, Carbs, Protein... and of course, COST)

So, they do whatever it takes to make their product LOW CAL, LOW-CARB, RICH in PROTEIN and try to do so at a LOW COST, so that YOU will buy it... What that USUALLY means is that they have to ADD artificial sweeteners like SUCRALOSE for taste and that "SUGAR-FREE" label (which by the way are PROVEN to make you gain weight by stimulating your appetite, increasing cravings and stimulating FAT storage) and/or SUBTRACT the actual NUTRITIONAL VALUE (so that they can keep COSTS down and make a profit!)

But here is the thing... Your body NEEDS NUTRIENTS (Vitamins, minerals, amino acids, phytonutrients, etc) in order to function as the well oiled machine it was designed to be... and while LOW-CAL may keep you SKINNY... It most definitely, alone, is not going to be what keeps you HEALTHY.

...and I am not just talking healthy like you won't get type-two diabetes or cancer... I KNOW most people aren't all that worried about that right now... But let me ask you this:

Do you wake up feeling RESTED?
Do you have SUSTAINED ENERGY throughout the day WITHOUT coffee or Red Bull?
Do you have CLEAR FOCUS while at work?
Are you constantly battling CRAVINGS?
Do you tend to get sick often?
Oh, and are you "REGULAR?" (you know what I mean)

ALL of these things are linked to your HEALTH and the kind of nutritional choices you are making...

So, yea... I believe in SHAKEOLOGY and I've drank it nearly EVERY day for the past 2 years...and YES, I am aware their are lower cost, lower cal, lower carb options out there! But when you KNOW BETTER... You DO BETTER!!! Dig a little deeper and I think you'll see, you always GET what you PAY for!936321_772393192786_412271735_n

DMAA's don't go there.

I just watched this piece on NBC's Rock Center.  The FDA says that DMAA's could kill you.  Make sure you know what ingredients are in your supplements.  We all take supplements because we want to be healthier, stronger, etc... but the Supplement Industry is not regulated by the FDA.  Make sure you do your research and read the labels. The more you know...

My Fitness Journey (The Condensed Version)

34974_446816110361_3901995_n

I was a High School and College athlete. After college I thought that I could continue to eat how I always had before and still remain fit. I ended up gaining about 50 lbs. My boss at the time got me to enter into a 5k run with just 2 days notice and no training. Being a college athlete I had pride and assumed that I could easily complete the 5k. I had a reality check when race day came. I did complete the race but I was disappointed in myself because I had to walk some portions of it and I did not finish in a time that was acceptable for an "athlete of my caliber." So began my fitness journey. From then on I entered many races and started doing P90x with a friend. I ended up losing 30 lbs during the program. I then switched my focus to running more and started running exclusively as my workouts. I then heard of the new Beachbody program Insanity, so i decided to give it a try. It was very intense and I only completed half of the 60 day program. Then in 2010 I decided it was now or never and I signed up for a full marathon. I had completed many other races at that point but none longer than a half marathon. I ran the full marathon, finished and felt great. Shortly after, Life got in the way and my schedule did not allow for much time to workout. I gained all the weight back. Since then I worked our with a trainer twice a week and added a lot of muscle weight. At this time I also started working on my diet with my Chiropractor who also does nutrition. I am feeling great right now since discovering Shakeology and I have it for breakfast everyday. It has helped me lose some of the weight. I am still on the search for my perfect body, and headed in the right direction. I continue to run and lift weights on a regular basis. With all of the knowledge I have learned about fitness over the years I feel like it is only right that I share it with others. If only someone had done the same to me so many years ago... So becoming a Beachbody Coach was a great fit for me and I look forward to the rest of my journey and helping others with theirs.

Bananas as natural remedies

Bananas_EarthTalk

Bananas contain three natural sugars -sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber. A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy.

Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world's leading athletes.

But energy isn't the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet.

DEPRESSION: According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.

PMS: Forget the pills - eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.

ANEMIA: High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia.

BLOOD PRESSURE: This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it perfect to beat blood pressure So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.

BRAIN POWER: 200 students at a Twickenham school ( England ) were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.

CONSTIPATION: High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.

HANGOVERS: One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.

HEARTBURN: Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.

MORNING SICKNESS: Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness.

MOSQUITO BITES: Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.

NERVES: Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system..

Overweight and at work? Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and chips. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady.

ULCERS: The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chroniclercases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.

TEMPERATURE CONTROL: Many other cultures see bananas as a 'cooling' fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand , for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature.

So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an apple, it has FOUR TIMES the protein, TWICE the carbohydrate, THREE TIMES the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals.. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around So maybe its time to change that well-known phrase so that we say, 'A BANANA a day keeps the doctor away!

The Importance of Fruits and Vegetables during Cancer Treatment

If you have been diagnosed with cancer, one of the most important things to include in your treatment regimen is good nutrition. Whether you are undergoing surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy or other cancer treatments, making fruits and vegetables a regular part of your diet can have a significant impact on the success of your treatment.

Many fruits and vegetables contain a number of cancer-fighting compounds that may improve your response to treatment and help you fight off cancer. Incorporating plant-based foods into your diet may also help you manage treatment-related side effects.

Fruits and Vegetables to Eat during Cancer Treatment

Plant-based foods, such as fruits are vegetables, play an important role in the treatment process. Here are some that may help in your fight against cancer:

  • Apples are a good source of fiber, which can help treat constipation, a possible side effect of cancer treatment. They are also a great source of vitamin C — which can help protect against cancers of the esophagus — and phytochemicals that show antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may be directly toxic to cancer cells.

  • Berries such as blueberries, strawberries and raspberries are also a great source for vitamin C and fiber. All berries contain the phytochemical ellagic acid, which may help fight against cancers of the skin, lung, bladder, esophagus and breast by reducing the reproduction rate of cancer cells.

  • Broccoli is rich in vitamins and minerals that may be helpful during treatment. It is a good source of vitamin C, but also a great source of folate, potassium, fiber, magnesium and beta-carotene.

  • Cherries are a good source of vitamin A, vitamin C and fiber. They may also help relieve pain, a major side effect of cancer treatment.

  • Corn is a vegetable relatively high in carbohydrates, which may help increase your energy during treatment.

  • Garlic, when crushed, diced or minced, release the anti-cancer agent, allicin, which can block the formation of cancer-causing substances. Garlic may also slow tumor growth.

  • Grapes, especially their skins, are rich in resveratrol, a phytochemical that demonstrates antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and may inhibit the growth of cancer cells.

  • Tomatoes contain lycopene, a phytochemical that may help fight against prostate, breast and lung cancers.

Nutritional needs vary from person to person and depend on many factors including the type and stage of cancer and how your body reacts to certain types of treatment. An oncology nutritionist can help you determine the best nutritional plan that is right for your individual needs. Eating fruits and vegetables during treatment is just one of many ways to improve your health during cancer treatment.
